Can you migrate an existing system without downtime?
In most cases, yes. We design migrations in stages with rollback points at each one, so the business keeps running while infrastructure moves underneath it. The specific approach depends on what's being migrated and how tightly it's coupled to the current environment.
How do you avoid vendor lock-in?
By defaulting to portable, widely-supported tooling (containers, infrastructure-as-code, standard APIs) instead of provider-specific services unless there's a clear reason to use them. The goal is architecture the business controls, not one that controls the business.
